Turtlenecks. A sweater with an upturned neck. Or, as a lot of today's society refers to them: an annoying, unattractive, androgynous sweater. However, I have my own definition I'd like to share with you:
A versatile and cosy staple piece.
Before I go onto anything else, grab a cuppa and get comfy! It's gunna be a long one! I'm not sure that I've told you guys, but I LOVE turtlenecks. It just so happens that the turtleneck is very "in" for this season and plenty of other bloggers, designers, and models are sporting them! However, they can be pretty intimidating. I get a lot of "Oh, I can't pull one off" when I ask my friends why they don't wear them. So not true. In order to prove them wrong, and get you guys to wear one, I thought I'd show three different ways I would style a turtleneck sweater.
Number One. The "Out with the Girls" look.
Whenever I want to look chic, I pull out a chunky turtleneck like this one! It adds an "umph" to the look, and creates a great deal of texture within the outfit. Personally, I'd style a sweater like this with some boyfriend jeans, heels, and a clutch. While the sweater provides structure, the jeans balance it out with a relaxed feel. Throw on a pair of heels and you have a good dose of sexy! Yes, I am inferring a turtleneck can be sexy. (Just WAIT for the next outfit!)
I would personally wear my hair down, as it is short. However, a messy pony would give this look a "model on a go-see" vibe! Throw on some delicate jewelry (like these hoops, or even better- an anklet), and you got the extra sparkle this outfit needs!
Now, I am no beauty guru or MUA but I would personally pair this look with a soft, smokey eye! It gives the outfit a total MKA vibe (for those who do not know, MKA= Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen). Who doesn't want that glamour! And to finish it off, a nice coat of clear gloss!
Number Two. The "Date Night" look.
I know what you are thinking, a TURTLENECK on a DATE NIGHT?! Yes. Yes. A million times yes. Paring a loose, chunky turtle neck with a silk slip creates a sexy, yet chic outfit. The sweater balances out the fact you are only wearing a lacy slip on the bottom, and the heels draw your date straight to your pins!
Now, I matched the shoes to the purse for a reason. When you add black shoes to a very light outfit like this one, it can sometimes look silly. However, if you add a balancing piece- say a black purse or black necklace etc- it ties the shoes into the outfit.
I know you shouldn't wear dark lipstick on a date if you plan to -ahem- you know, however this bordeaux lipstick NEEDED to be apart of this outfit. It adds a great amount of drama.
Number Three. The "Cosy Running Around" look.
Now, I don't know about you (but I'm feeling 22... ;) ) but on days when I'm running around town I want to look CUTE. However, I want to be COMFORTABLE too. Is that too hard to ask? Nope. Not with a turtle neck! This piece is noticeably thinner than the other two sweaters I've shown so I thought I'd throw a throw over top to keep cosy in this January air!
I've gone with blue jeans and cowboy boots to give this look a "modern day cowboy" feel! Well, a cowboy if he was walking down the runway! haha. Of course my big tote is necessary for two reasons. One: Shove all the stuff I buy into it. Two: It's ADORABLE.
Now I didn't include makeup in this look. On days that I run out, I'm usually just wearing some foundation and chapstick. Or a very simple makeup look. A cute bun would do the trick to keep the hair out of your face, or if you have a lob like me, braid back the first couple strands!
Now I know some of you are still saying- "I have a short neck, I can't wear those!" Nope. Completely not true. Wrongo.
I've shown three different sweaters within this lookbook. The first, a short cropped turtle neck, is PERFECT for those who have shorter necks. It gives the appearance of a "full blown" turtleneck without drowning you. The second, a chunky neck, allows for a "runway" look. Most designers who incorporate turtlenecks within their shows, use this bulky neck! It's very couture, and chic. It is my personal favorite. The last sweater is pretty standard. An "old school" turtleneck if you will. If you have a longer neck, this is a great choice for you! It's a classic look which you will pull off divinely.
How do you style turtlenecks? Will you try one now? If so, which kind?
xx
Emily
