Messy (adj) : Untidy or Dirty
If someone asked the usual state of my closet that is the one adjective I wouldn't hesitate to call it. However, starting the new year, that's going to change. Instead, I want clean, organized, and darn I say immaculate to be the chosen adjective for my closet. While ripping apart my closet and starting my organization, I thought I'd share some tips I found helpful while purifying this mess!
Before:
After:
1. Decide what you want to keep, give away, throw away, or put in a memory box. Have an old band t-shirt that you don't wear but can't think of giving up? Put it in a memory box. This way in 20 years you will have the memories and a vintage tee! Have pants ridden with holes and are 3 inches too short? Throw them out! No one wants your old moth eaten pants! There is a difference between something that could be patched up vs. something that has lost most of it's fabric. Whatever is left, pile into two bins: keeping and giving away. Package the give away box and send those to your local good will, or younger sibling.
2. Organize by piece, and then color. I find it helpful to separate pieces. Whether it's outwear from tops, or long coats from dresses. Keeping organized by piece helps you find them, and not forget about them! I hate when I'm sifting trhough my closet and find a piece that I forgot about! I go into the "I could have worn THIS last week to blah blah blah." Seperate your clothes, don't forget about them. I organize by color. However, you do not have to. I highly recommend organizing by something though, besides the type of clothing that is. This helps your closet efficiency. Say, if I wanted a blue top for my outfit, I could easily sift through my selection and pick one!
3. Make sure you can SEE everything. This is a weird one, but if you had a messy closet like mine, you'll understand. My shoes are usually the ones lost to sight. In fact, in my closet update, I moved my shirt shelf up one level to be able to better see my shoes. This helps the asthesics of your closet as well as help lower frustration when you can't find that pair of shoes you wanted! I don't know about you, but as soon as I start to dig through hangers to try to see my shoes, shirts start to fall and then the frustration starts.
4. Don't forget about other storage units. Storage bins and dressers can help ease the amount of hangers in your closet. Camisoles, basic t-shirts, and jeans can all be stored within a dresser and help limit the use of hangers and therefore maximize space.
5. KEEP IT CLEAN. Whew. The hard one. I know what you are thinking- "Ugh but it's so hard!"- but we can do this! We can pick up that shirt that fell to ground. We can hang up the clothes we threw on the ground when trying to get ready for a night out. We can keep our closets beautiful!
How is your closet situation? Any ideas of how to keep a closet organized?
Oh! and GOOD LUCK!
